Buddhism is divided into two kinds: Theravada (Hinayana) (emphasizing personal practice and the attainment of enlightenment, prevalent in Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar) and Mahayana (emphasizing liberation from suffering and the ideal of the Bodhisattva, prevalent in China, Japan, and Korea). Theravada preserves the original teachings, while Mahayana adapts them to cultural contexts and believes in emptiness (vulnerability).
